A Summer in China

Pre-Departure Message
Earlier this year, I was presented with an amazing opportunity - to teach English, sports, and fine arts in a Chinese elementary school for the summer, all expenses paid through DukeEngage. DukeEngage, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, empowers Duke students to address critical human needs through immersive service. In my case, this means traveling to a less affluent area of the Guangdong Province in Southern China so children may converse with a native speaker. I, along with two other Duke students, will be teaching English classes at the Qingxin No. 1 Elementary School, as well as working towards re-developing music and arts in an area generally known as a "cultural desert." I am confident that this experience will be rewarding and changing, for both the community and for us students.
